Academia Sinica

Chinese Name: 中央研究院
Online: http://www.sinica.edu.tw/
Libraries Database Search: http://las.sinica.edu.tw/

Directions

While it can be reached by train from Taipei main train station, perhaps the fastest way to get there is by riding the blue line of the Jieyun (捷運 or subway) to Kunyang (昆揚) station. Take exit number 1. You will find yourself facing the Chunghsiao East Road (中孝). Cross the street (there is a walkway over the road) and turn left so that the station is across to your left. Walk until you get to the bus stop. From the bus stop catch a bus numbered 212 for $15, it seems to come fairly often. The bus company is 東南汽車客運 (http://www.airbus.com.tw/city_bus/index.html). Ride the bus for about 20 minutes until you get to the stop (numbered 4 on the map inside the bus) for Academia Sinica (中研院), which is also announced in English. When you emerge you will be standing outside a post office. Follow the street to your left and continue to follow the pavement as the street curves to the right. This will place you at the entrance of Academia Sinica. There are maps of the campus on many of the roads inside. The main reception building has two cafeterias, a bookstore in the basement with many publications of Academia Sinica (M-Saturday 10:30-21), bathrooms, and an ATM for Taipei bank.

Academia Sinica is Taiwan's large government research institution. It consists of a large number of smaller institutes, some of which have their own archives and libraries attached to them. Due to the large number and variety of libraries, information is split up below into each library:

The Institute for Modern History is marked on all the maps inside Academia Sinica. The library is the small building located immediately to the left of the institute. You will be able to see the handicapped ramp leading to the entrance, which is not well marked.

Usage

The library is free of charge and available for anyone conducting research and has a student ID or other proof of connection to a research institution. After showing your ID you will be given a magnetic card which you use to beep yourself into and out of the library by placing the card close to the reader at the entrance. There are lockers at the entrance where you place your backs. After putting your belongings in, choose a combination number and then lock the locker. There is no money required for this.

Facilities

Card Catalogs:
Computers: 2 Windows machines on 2nd floor in the reference area for searching the library. Database for the library is available online but some other databases at Academia Sinica only work when "on campus".
Reading Room: There are plenty of seats in the stacks and reference area.
Photocopy Machines: There is one photocopy machine on the first and one on the third floor which allow visitors to use paid photocopy cards. Other machines use a different payment mechanism which not open to outsiders.
Photocopy Prices: A card can be purchased at the main desk for $100, enough for 100 copies.
Vending Machines:
Nearby Food: There are two cafeterias in the main building for the campus, to the right of the fitness center.

Collections of Note

In addition to books in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, there are a large collection of journals and old newspapers (many of them have been moved to the national library, however). The archive next door, separate from the library, contains many of the famous modern archive materials for the Modern History Institute.

Other Notes, Comments and Experiences

There were not many people when I visited and I got lots of help from the friendly employees. There was sometimes a wait for the only two photocopy machines but the price is reasonable. The journal archives have their own separate number scheme so don't go looking for them in the stacks. When you can't find journals that should be there, you may find them in other libraries on campus, like the Taishisuo. The floors have maps along the stairs which give you a rough idea of where to find materials. -K. M. Lawson (Last Visit: October 24, 2003)

When I visited I found that the computers are not set up for pinyin input, which made it difficult to search at the guo ting-yi library (I had no trouble at Fu Ssu-nian). Just a bit annoying for an American and mainland-trained second language speaker. [K. Poling Jan 2008]

Institute of History and Philology: Fu Ssu-nian Library

General Information

Chinese Name: 歷史語言研究所 傅斯年圖書館
Online: http://lib.ihp.sinica.edu.tw/c/
Opening Times: M-F, 8:30-17:00
Information Last Confirmed: January, 2008

Usage

The library is free of charge and available for anyone conducting research and has a student ID or other proof of connection to a research institution. You sign in and give up your ID in exchange for a daily badge. There are lockers at the entrance where you place your bags. After putting your belongings in, choose a combination number and then lock the locker. There is no money required for this.

Facilities

Computers: 3 Windows machines in the reference area for searching the library. Database for the library is available online, and the database is for the entire AS system, so you end up searching many libraries at once. There are two computers dedicated to searching the online database of Qing documents (the "neige daku" often colloquially called the "ming-qing dang'an"). A librarian must sign you in to access this catalouge.
Reading Room: Several seating areas in the various stacks and the manuscripts reading section on the main floor
Photocopy Machines: There are 5 machines in the lobby next to the main reference desk. They get busy in the afternoon.
Photocopy Prices: A card can be purchased at the main desk for $1oo, enough for 100 copies or $300 enough for 350 copies. Cheap!
Other Notes, Comments and Experiences There are three buildings in this library, all with different schemes as to what is the first, second, third floor. Maps on the floor help you make it to the right section. Unlike other libraries on the AS campus, the books in the Fu Ssu-nian collection are separated by where they were published: there is a "dalu" section for mainland china books separate from the "zhongwen" section. Rare books must be called but other stacks are open.
