HunanChangsha, Hunan Province: Hunan Provincial Library (0731-4129563), Hunan Provincial Archive (http://www.hn-archives.gov.cn, 0731-2688561), Hunan Academy of Social Sciences Library Access: Readers’ card is not necessary, but passport is required to request files. Pre-49 book room is on the fourth floor. The hours that the room is open do not correspond to the posted hours; they also rest for three hours at lunch. To access the room before the whole library opens, go through the staff entrance on the side. Reading fees and photocopying fees are quite expensive. Photocopying is 4 yuan a page for books, 8 yuan if you want the entire pamphlet, and 8 yuan for anything handwritten. All must be approved. Contact: None. Hunan Provincial Archive Access: Open 8-12, rest from 12-3, open 3-6. I had no trouble registering here. I had to show I.D. and sign in at the gate, and filled out a form and handed in my letter of introduction in the made building. The reading room here consists of one room with about 9 desks and bookcases full of mulu. It took me awhile to figure out how the mulu were divided. Most of the mulu were for PRC era. The Republican mulu were in the lower cabinets and in addition to the files for government bureaus and committees, there were also mulu referring to particular factories, banks, etc. The proportion of Republican mulu to PRC mulu (probably 25% of the mulu shelves), compared to the division I noticed later in Sichuan makes me think that perhaps much was burned in the Changsha great fire, but that’s just a guess. 15 yuan per file reading fee. I don’t remember the photocopying fee. |
