Collections of Note

The second floor has a large computer room (electronic reading room), a reference room with a wide variety of dictionaries and plentiful seating space, and there are relatively small reading rooms with selections of books for lending on the second and third floor.

Recent newspapers and periodicals are found in a room of that name on the third floor, with some foreign language books on the fourth floor.

A variety of local materials related to Shandong can be found in the fifth floor local materials room (山东地方文献阅览室) including local gazateers, 文史资料, local CCP party histories, and other Shandong related yearbooks and statistics along with a rare books room which requires a higher "level" of reading card.

There is a small bookstore on the grounds of the library down some stairs as you enter the library.

Newspapers from before 1949 are not available for direct viewing and you need to go to the microfilm room which charges 50 RMB per reel. Some of older newspapers available on microfilm but not listed in the library database include:

Other Notes, Comments and Experiences

  • Getting a readers card took only a few minutes with my passport, using a Chinese name, an American address, and no local Chinese information. I told them I was going to be visiting Shandong several times during the year and that seemed to satisfy them. The library computer room filled up some thirty minutes after opening time so if you want to use them, get there early. There were not a lot of places to sit in the reading rooms, except for the reference room which had more room. Periodical room did not seem to have old newspapers for the province. As with most places, bring your own toilet paper. Kmlawson (Last Visited: March, 2008)
  • The microfilm room is a bit difficult to find. If you will be viewing a lot of newspapers, ask for a discount on the regular price that is charged. You can also ask for permission to use your camera for a discounted charge per photo, instead of paying to print out pages on their better microfilm machine. Kmlawson (Last Visited: November, 2008)
