Shandong Provincial ArchiveShandong Provincial ArchiveGeneral InformationChinese Name: 山东省档案局 DirectionsLocated on the northeast corner of the intersection of Jingshi Lu (经十路) and Weiyi Lu (纬一路). Looking south you can see, directly ahead of you, the large concrete war memorial on a hill in the park. It is the first entrance on the right going north from the intersection. You have walked too far if you reach the entrance to the provincial party headquarters (中国共产党山东省委员会) which is next door. TransportationThere are bus stops nearby. If you are staying near Shandong University, bus number 75 will get you there. Board the bus on 洪楼南路. To get there, exit the north exit of the university, turn right and then right again at the next four way intersection. The first bus stop is where you can board bus number 75. UsageUsers are supposed to have a danwei, a university affiliation, or a letter of reference. When you arrive, present your credentials and identification to the security guard at the entrance. Proceed to the right and through the main entrance. In a hall roughly straight ahead, enter the 查档接待室 office on the right. Present your letter of introduction there. The staff member registers you in their database, along with your affiliation in China. At some point after registration you will receive a small identification slip (查档证)which you can use to enter the archive if you have indicated that you will be making multiple visits. You may search for some records online via their online database before going to the archive. However, the database connection available via outside the archive on the web (as opposed to their local intranet) is very slow and has a very limited range of materials showing up, only from their 革命历史 collection. Additionally, depending on the browser used and your search terms, there seem to be a number of errors in the online database interface. The archive does not offer a printed index of materials and all documents are now searched for through an internal intranet archive database. This you can find the nearby reading room, also on the right in the hall. Files are all requested through the computer intranet database. Select the database (建国以后,革命历史,民国,etc.) you wish to search by words in the file title or by other information, including the file number (for any files found in footnotes or through the online database). When searching by file numbers, use the format [A-Z]###-##-####-###, that is, a letter and number for the 全宗号, followed by the 案卷, 卷号, and 件号, using leading zeroes if necessary. When you have located documents you wish to see, activate the check box and press the request button at the top left of the table. You will be returned to your search results after confirming the request and can continue to look at results if their are multiple pages of hits, or make a new search. You can also view the documents you have already requested through the system. They do not permit using the printer attached to the search computers (2009.1) but if you have a USB drive with you, you can copy/paste the requested document numbers or list of search hits into a text file and save it onto your USB drive. There is no external internet connection via these machines. You are permitted to bring a computer with you for note taking and there is some limited access to power via the left wall of the reading room (but it is further from the light of the window). You are also allowed to use your own pens, notebooks, and have other small electronics with you in the reading room. However, large bags must be deposited in lockers provided for visitors near the entrance before requested materials have arrived. Files from the 革命历史 and 民国 collections cannot, in principle, be photocopied. The stated reason is the poor condition of the materials. Taking pictures with cameras is also, according to official policy, not permitted. There may be exceptions. At some point in the request process you are given a form to fill out some information. This includes indicating your 单位, which should be your local Chinese affiliation, and list the name of your contact scholar or official in China, and then your name in the appropriate field. For the purpose of your visit to the archive, they apparently don't need more than for you to write "学术研究" in the box provided. When requested files are delivered, which can be within minutes of notifying a staff member that you have submitted a request, they are first inspected by archive staff who do a quick determination by some means about whether the materials are appropriate for viewing before letting you read the items. Gloves and masks are not provided (at least for 革命历史 documents). If you will be making an extended visit across several days, the archive seems to prefer that you request a large number of documents up front so they get an overview of what you want (within the parameters of your stated research goal, as laid out in your introduction letter). They seem to be willing to accept further requests at a future time. After viewing a collection of documents during the day, if you plan on continuing the following day, you will be asked to put your collection of documents (both those you have completed and are yet to look through) in a separate locker at the back of the reading room for retrieval on a future visit. FacilitiesComputers: Two computers dedicated for database search. Two other computers in the room, but not in use. Collections of Note
