Changing Clothes in China: Fashion, History, Nation. Columbia University Press, 2007.\" rel=\"footnote\">1<\/a><\/sup>  on modern Chinese fashion is very good in all sorts of ways, but I was struck by a couple of cartoons by Guo Jianying. The first is rather funny, and centers around the husband as a consumer good.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3217\/2475947398_c8b54a93f8.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"Guo1\" width=\"293\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The second is more purely misogynist<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3150\/2475947444_74d40c5a1a.jpg?v=0\" alt=\"Guo 2\" width=\"439\" height=\"500\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Guo was a pretty important figure, editor of the <em>Woman&#8217;s Pictorial<\/em>. He also seems to have not much cared for women, or perhaps had a specific dislike for women as part of a general dislike of humanity. I find it sort of interesting that he seems to be reproducing Western criticism of &#8220;uppity&#8221; women almost exactly. One part of making China modern was importing modern concepts about gender roles, and here Guo has imported a pretty western version of sexism.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"footnotes\"><ol class=\"footnotes\" style=\"list-style-type:decimal\"><li id=\"fn1-421\"><p >Finnane, Antonia.
