{"id":5223,"date":"2005-02-27T10:20:55","date_gmt":"2005-02-27T15:20:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/japan\/?p=56"},"modified":"2014-08-30T14:13:51","modified_gmt":"2014-08-30T14:13:51","slug":"strange-name-on-a-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/2005\/02\/strange-name-on-a-map\/","title":{"rendered":"Strange name on a map"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This question is not related to Japanese history directly, rather it was when looking at old maps of Japan that I found this strange name.<br \/>\n The maps I have looked at is found <a href=\"http:\/\/library.ust.hk\/info\/exhibit\/maps-9706\/map-gallery1.html\">here.<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In some of the maps an area to the south is marked and with simple geographic thinking, it should represent the north of Australia. For hundreds of years the belief in a southeren continent, Australis, existed. On a map of 1575 it is named:<br \/>\nBEACH, pars<br \/>\ncontentis Australis<\/p>\n<p>On a map from 1595<br \/>\nBEACH<br \/>\nprovincia Aurifera (latin for goldbearing province (or similar)<\/p>\n<p>(As Abel Tasman was there in early 1640s, further maps name it Nova Hollandia.)<\/p>\n<p>I checked the 1595&#8217;s creator a little closer and he was a dutch jesuit. All texts on the map are written in dutch or latin. But where does the name &#8220;Beach&#8221; fit in? I have looked in Dutch, Latin, Portuguese and Spanish dictionaries without any luck.
