I didn&#8217;t make my 5-year old sit through the boring speeches, but once they were over we all had fun wandering the exhibits (actually, when you do it with a 5-year old, you&#8217;re not &#8220;wandering&#8221; but &#8220;examining in great but sometimes random detail&#8221;) and eating mochi and brownies.<br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>I was expecting the Japanese dolls, though the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/sets\/72157594568249185\/\">classic 1932 HinaMatsuri set<\/a> was more charming than I expected.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/409419970\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/156\/409419970_04cae5b347.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"453\" alt=\"HinaDollsof1932\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/sets\/72157594568250494\/\">historical materials<\/a> were a very nice touch &#8212; entirely in line with the mission of the HJC, but I wasn&#8217;t expecting to see an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/409373663\/\">original contract<\/a> on display.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/409373663\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/168\/409373663_a58ffa5c9d.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"362\" alt=\"ImmigrationContract1900\" \/><\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>There was also a &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/wgordon.web.wesleyan.edu\/dolls\/index.htm\">Friendship Doll<\/a>&#8221; from the &#8217;20s (found, I was told, in a mainland thrift shop) along with documents relating to the whole friendship doll movement (there&#8217;s even a Shibusawa Eiichi picture in there)<\/p>\n<div align=center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/409335364\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/124\/409335364_e0c51a979d.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" alt=\"PeaceFriendshipDoll\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>And, because there&#8217;s nothing like kitsch to warm the heart, <\/p>\n<div align=center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/409356356\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm1.static.flickr.com\/162\/409356356_b17cfce9aa.jpg\" width=\"363\" height=\"500\" alt=\"KimonoCladHelloKitty\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p>You can see the whole set of pictures <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jondresner\/sets\/72157594568230993\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Hawai&#8217;i Japanese Center had an open house today for Girls&#8217; Day, and I brought my camera.
