{"id":5447,"date":"2009-10-07T23:03:06","date_gmt":"2009-10-08T04:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/japan\/?p=795"},"modified":"2014-08-30T13:59:13","modified_gmt":"2014-08-30T13:59:13","slug":"japans-imperial-universities-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/2009\/10\/japans-imperial-universities-today\/","title":{"rendered":"Japan&#8217;s Imperial Universities Today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The last time I looked at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/japan\/2005\/01\/japanese-universities-in-world-context\/\">Japanese universities in a global ranking<\/a>, I commented that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>most of the universities on this list were the product of the US Occupation education reforms, particularly the insistence on public universities in every prefecture.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In a sense, that was true, but it was a list of the top 500 global institutions, and there were 37 Japanese representatives. The top seven were the former Imperial universities: Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Tohoku, Nagoya, Hokkaido, Kyushu. Somehow I didn&#8217;t actually make that connection until looking at the <i>Times Higher Education<\/i> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk\/Rankings2009-Top200.html\">Top 200 global institutions<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/Airminded\/status\/4694904612\">via<\/a>], which included more or less the same list:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>22. Tokyo<\/li>\n<li>25. Kyoto<\/li>\n<li>43. Osaka<\/li>\n<li>55. Tokyo Institute of Technology (which was just below the Imperials on the old list)<\/li>\n<li>92. Nagoya<\/li>\n<li>97. Tohoku<\/li>\n<li>142. Keio (Keio and Waseda did better in the THE lists than the old ones)<\/li>\n<li>148. Waseda<\/li>\n<li>155. Kyushu<\/li>\n<li>171. Hokkaido<\/li>\n<li>174. Tsukuba<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Without a detailed look at methodology, it&#8217;s not easy to tell if the differences are substantial, but the strength of the technical schools (TIT, Tsukuba) and the private academies (KO, Waseda) was interesting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The last time I looked at Japanese universities in a global ranking, I commented that most of the universities on this list were the product of the US Occupation education reforms, particularly the insistence on public universities in every prefecture.
