{"id":5959,"date":"2008-02-01T03:15:53","date_gmt":"2008-02-01T08:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/korea\/2008\/02\/19487-mission-accomplished\/"},"modified":"2014-08-30T14:22:20","modified_gmt":"2014-08-30T14:22:20","slug":"19487-mission-accomplished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/2008\/02\/19487-mission-accomplished\/","title":{"rendered":"1948.7 &#8211; Mission Accomplished"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I couldn&#8217;t help of thinking about a certain <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2003\/05\/20030501-15.html\">speech<\/a> when I saw this headline in the July 4th, 1948 issue of the <em>The Korean Free Press<\/em> (\uc790\uc720\uc2e0\ubb38 \u81ea\u7531\u65b0\u805e).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Military Operations in Cheju are For the Most Part Completed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/korea\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscf3327.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/korea\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/02\/dscf3327-tm.jpg\" width=\"169\" height=\"250\" alt=\"Major Operations Over\" style=\"margin-top:5px; margin-right:5px; margin-bottom:5px; margin-left:5px;\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In April, 1948 the island of Cheju-do erupted in what became a major uprising that resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of Koreans, or an estimated 10% of the island&#8217;s population.  The above article, with its optimistic headline, is found months before the violence reaches its peak, and only a few weeks before troops heading to crush the rebellion themselves rebel in the port town of Y\u014fsu in October.
