The paper is &#8220;Zhang Guangyu&#8217;s Xiyou Manji (Manhua Journey to the West) (1945) and the Chinese Tradition of Visual Satire&#8221; and I am doing it for a conference on comics that our English department is hosting. Mostly I am just doing it to introduce some stuff about Chinese comics, leading up to Zhang&#8217;s 1945 work, which I would claim is maybe China&#8217;s first <em>manhua, <\/em> in the sense of a graphic novel<sup id=\"rf1-6868\"><a href=\"#fn1-6868\" title=\" I am not that hung up on &#8220;firsts&#8221;, but for this paper it works.\" rel=\"footnote\">1<\/a><\/sup> For those of you who don&#8217;t know the work, Nick Stember has put the whole thing on-line. It is basically a wartime adaptation of Journey to the West.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2015111817002884725.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6876 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2015111817002884725-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"2015111817002884725\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2015111817002884725-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/2015111817002884725.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I talk about how <em>Xiyou Manji<\/em> is important in terms of format and design, but also in its criticism of the government. Zhang Guangyu, the author, had a long history as a <em>manhua <\/em>artist, and I look at the stuff he did and published as the editor of <i>Shanghai Manhua<br \/>\n<\/i>in 1928-1930. <em>Manhua <\/em>artists and magazines tended to get into political trouble, and they did post some stuff that would seem to lead to trouble, like this caricature of Chiang Kai-shek.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ShanghaiManhuaCKSCover.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6883 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ShanghaiManhuaCKSCover-201x300.jpg\" alt=\"shanghaimanhuackscover\" width=\"257\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ShanghaiManhuaCKSCover-201x300.jpg 201w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ShanghaiManhuaCKSCover-768x1145.jpg 768w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ShanghaiManhuaCKSCover-687x1024.jpg 687w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/ShanghaiManhuaCKSCover-800x1193.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/a> There were a couple of things that kept them on or near the right side of the censors, however. One was the fact that they tended at this point to focus on social criticism of the corruption in Shanghai society,\u00a0 a topic where Nanjing might agree with them, and they did it is a foreign, modernist idiom that was not likely to get much traction with the masses.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/001Xd93Qzy72ZWZVtBJ9f690.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6875 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/001Xd93Qzy72ZWZVtBJ9f690-252x300.jpeg\" alt=\"001xd93qzy72zwzvtbj9f690\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/001Xd93Qzy72ZWZVtBJ9f690-252x300.jpeg 252w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/001Xd93Qzy72ZWZVtBJ9f690.jpeg 690w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The other thing was that things like caricatures were clearly critical, they were not very pointed. Apparently you could get away with vague criticisms of leaders, but not with specific policy criticisms.<\/p>\n<p>The closest I found to policy criticism in <em>Shanghai Manhua <\/em>was their treatment of the 1929 <em>Jiangan<\/em> opium case, in which a shipload of opium that was pretty clearly being protected by someone high up in the government was seized. The case was never never solved, and<sup id=\"rf2-6868\"><a href=\"#fn2-6868\" title=\"There is a bit more on the case here Baumler, Alan. The Chinese and Opium under the Republic: Worse Than Floods and Wild Beasts. Albany: State University of New York Press, 2007. p.136.\" rel=\"footnote\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>There were plenty of cartoons about it. Who is responsible for this case? Its a mystery!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jiangan5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6882\" src=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jiangan5-288x300.jpg\" alt=\"jiangan5\" width=\"288\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jiangan5-288x300.jpg 288w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jiangan5-768x799.jpg 768w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jiangan5-984x1024.jpg 984w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Jiangan5-800x833.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 288px) 100vw, 288px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We do eventually get some things about minor figures involved in the case, but this is a long was from the type of explicit stuff cartoonists will do later, and that Zhang will do in 1945. A number of scholars have called the <em>Shanghai manhua<\/em> apolitical, and I think that is clearly wrong, a lot of their social criticism stuff is clearly political.
