{"id":88,"date":"2006-02-13T14:52:02","date_gmt":"2006-02-13T19:52:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/china\/?p=88"},"modified":"2014-08-30T13:41:14","modified_gmt":"2014-08-30T13:41:14","slug":"world-historical-trends-valentines-day-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/2006\/02\/world-historical-trends-valentines-day-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"World Historical Trends: Valentine&#039;s Day Surgery?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My father sent along <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/afp\/20060213\/lf_afp\/afplifestylevalentine_060213153429\">this article<\/a> about the rise in Shanghai of plastic surgery being marketed to couples as a Valentine&#8217;s Day celebration\/present.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know which is the more interesting world historical trend: the rise of Valentine&#8217;s Day as a secular world event or the spread of plastic surgery as a status symbol, in spite of its <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/health\/4609166.stm\">risks<\/a> [<a href=\"http:\/\/cruellablog.blogspot.com\/2006\/01\/big-rise-in-casual-sex.html\">via<\/a>].<\/p>\n<p>Of course, at some point someone will try to make an analogy or comparison or otherwise link this with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.froginawell.net\/china\/?p=55\">footbinding<\/a>, but I think it&#8217;s going to be a tough sell, given the temporal and cultural distance between the two practices, without some serious underlying theoretical foundation&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>On slightly more serious note, the latest <i>Japan Focus<\/i> (which is going to have to change its name soon, given its broader scope) includes an interesting and nicely detailed <a href=\"http:\/\/japanfocus.org\/article.asp?id=518\">article by Yonson Ahn<\/a> about the historiographical border war between Korea and China. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My father sent along this article about the rise in Shanghai of plastic surgery being marketed to couples as a Valentine&#8217;s Day celebration\/present.
