Did an engraver creating banknotes for a Japanese puppet bank in the 1940s slip in a picture of Confucius making an obscene gesture to the Japanese? I\u00a0 have asked this question <a href=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/2019\/12\/confucius-hates-japan\/\">before<\/a>, and never gotten an answer.<\/p>\n<p>I still don\u2019t have an answer, but it turns out that I do have a <em>locus classicus. <\/em>Paul Linebarger\u00a0 (a.k.a. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cordwainer_Smith\">Cordwainer Smith<\/a>) included this story and the picture of the note in his<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/psychologicalwar0000line\/page\/n9\/mode\/2up\"> <em>Psychological Warfare <\/em><\/a>pg 141.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Smith-Note.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-9608\" src=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Smith-Note-300x214.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" srcset=\"https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Smith-Note-300x214.png 300w, https:\/\/froginawell.net\/frog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Smith-Note.png 575w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Given his history in the Office of War Information, I would assume that this at least a period myth.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At long last an issue is solved!
