About this book
東京貿易業者名鑑 (Tokyo Commercial & Industrial Museum) · Tokyo Commercial & Industrial Museum (府立東京商工奨勵館), Tokyo, December 1939
A bilingual directory of the Tokyo firms engaged in export and import, compiled by the prefectural Tokyo Commercial and Industrial Museum for foreign buyers. Its 1,305 numbered firm entries (pp. 1–218, with a supplement) give each firm's name and address in English and in Japanese, its kind of business (manufacturers, traders), cable address, telegraph codes and bankers, and what it exports and imports, usually with the countries traded with. An alphabetical index of articles, separately for exports and imports, lists the firm numbers dealing in each commodity, from abrasives to zip fasteners.
The firm entries and the index of articles are transcribed; the foreword, the description of the museum and the alphabetical index of firms (which only repeats names and numbers) are not. Each two-page spread was read once: the firm entries by GPT-6.1 Sol (Codex), the index of articles by Gemini 3.8 Flash (Antigravity), with no checking by eye. Japanese characters the first reader could not make out (about 6% of firms had one) were re-read by Claude Sonnet 5.5 from the page image, which filled all but one; a reading was accepted only if it changed nothing but the unreadable characters. Japanese names and addresses keep the old character forms as printed. Firm numbers are as printed, including the book's own gaps in the numbering (e.g. nos. 516 and 798); the index of articles also cites nos. 798 and 1313, which have no entry in the directory. Firm numbers in the index link to the firm's entry.
