  "t": "One of the most disastrous cotton fires ever recorded in Shanghai occurred on July 8, when Godowns E5 and F6 of the China Merchants' Steam Navigation Co.'s Pootung Wharf were totally destroyed. The insurances in force amounted to over $2,000,000, and total losses have been paid under most of the policies concerned owing to the fact that, due to the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese hostilities, it was not possible to recover and recondition the damaged cotton, from which at one time it was hoped for a 40 per cent salvage. The Chinese insurance companies carried the bulk of the insurance.",
