Nagasaki Foreign Settlement panorama

This website is devoted to the history and culture of the foreign settlement that existed at Nagasaki, Japan from 1859 to 1941. The site was created and maintained by Lane R. Earns (University of Wisconsin Oshkosh) and Brian Burke-Gaffney (Nagasaki Institute of Applied Science).

The Nagasaki Foreign Settlement was comprised of six districts: Dejima, Umegasaki, Oura, Oura-Sagarimatsu, Higashiyamate (East Hillside), and Minamiyamate (South Hillside). At its peak, the settlement was home to several hundred foreign residents from dozens of countries around the world.
