The Japan Directory 1884

The Japan Directory for the Year 1884
Printed and published at the office of the "Japan Gazette", Yokohama, January 1884

All tables and directory lists are transcribed: the front appendix tables (including the twelve calendar months), every port directory, the alphabetical list of residents, the Mitsu Bishi and Kiodo Unyu fleet lists and timetables, and the import, export, storage and Corean tariffs. The running text is not: the Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, treaties, conventions and regulations, the prose on the imperial family and on the Corean ports, the code of signals and house flags, and the advertisements. Pages were found from contact sheets; each two-page spread was read once, from whole-page and half-page images, by GPT-6.1 Sol (Codex) or, for about a fifth of the spreads, by Gemini 3.8 Flash (Antigravity), with no checking by eye; the reader of each spread is not marked. The two models group directory entries slightly differently (one entry per person or one per office). Unreadable figures or words are marked [?]. Several pages of the alphabetical list are bound out of order in this copy; entries keep the printed page numbers. The table of foreign moneys (p. 25 of the appendix) is printed sideways and was turned upright before reading.
