All 209 numbered tables are transcribed, with four unnumbered sub-tables printed beside them and the weights-and-measures tables (度量衡比較、合數及略算法); the contents, the index, the page of charts (which print no figures), the bureau's list of publications and the colophon are not. Tables printed across both pages of a spread are joined into one, and long tables read in sections by different readers are joined; where a table is printed as successive column blocks with different year ranges (table 25), each block is a separate part. Printed totals were re-added by the readers: totals that do not add up are kept as printed and noted (many differ by one or two units of rounding in thousand-yen figures). Where a digit was ambiguous only between 3 and 8 and exactly one reading made a printed total reconcile, that reading is used and noted. About 320 of some 119,000 figure cells could not be read and are marked [?]; a literal ? printed in the book is kept as ?. A spot check, in which a second model re-transcribed two tables (1,296 figures) independently, agreed on all but one cell, which is marked unreadable.
