Every table is transcribed, including the small tables set into the chapter introductions; the prose, the contents, the city indexes, the bibliography of municipal literature, advertisements and the publisher's lists are not. Each spread was read once by Claude Haiku 5.5 (most tables) or Claude Sonnet 5.5 (the list of all cities, electricity, tramway and water rate schedules, and other text-heavy tables) from full-resolution crops, with no check by eye. Claude Sonnet 5.5 then re-read the tables whose rows did not add up in suspicious numbers or whose names were left unreadable, and redid two batches in full; several misaligned cells were corrected. Unreadable figures are [?]; printed totals that do not add up are kept as printed and noted. Tables printed over several spreads were read in pieces and joined; tables whose title runs across the gutter were joined row by row from their left- and right-page halves.
