All tables are transcribed, including the summary boxes on the chapter title pages and the appendix of weights and measures; the contents pages and the 凡例 are not. Tables printed across both pages of a spread are joined into one; a few very long tables were read in sections by different readers and joined. Printed totals were re-added by the readers: totals that do not add up are kept as printed and noted, as are a few printed numbering errors (tables 88 and 89 are headed 103 and 104 in the book; table 168 is listed in the contents without a title or page). Where a digit was ambiguous only between 3 and 8 and exactly one reading made a printed total reconcile, that reading is used and noted. About 160 of some 245,000 figure cells could not be read and are marked [?]; a literal ? printed in the book is kept as ?. Two spot checks, in which a second model re-transcribed six tables independently, agreed on 99.8% of figure cells.
